My students are inner-city middle schoolers who want to become better readers. They are extremely eager to learn about their culture as well as to hear about the lives of African-American people. I believe that through these selected books, my students will be able to gain a sense of pride knowing that African Americans have done great things and are continuously striving for excellence. I feel that when students can relate to the readings and materials that we offer them, it will help to enhance their educational reading levels as well as changing their mindsets about some of the challenges that happens in the world around us.
As teachers, it is our duty to provide our students will cultural, social, and educational resources. These books will help to enhance my reading students to want to strive for excellence. These stories represent the hard efforts that African-Americans have fought hard to gain a place in history and I believe that the more teachers can encourage our students to be successful leaders; the better the outcome will be for them in their adult lives.
