In our high school book room, there is not a single book featuring an LGBTQ+ character. In addition, there are very few texts featuring Latinx characters, and those texts are outdated. Because of this, I worked with another English 1 Advanced teacher, Ms. Reed, on an application to get Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz approved by our high school and district for implementation in our core freshman curriculum. This text has an LGBTQ+ Mexican-American protagonist who is struggling with anxiety about the complex nature of his identity. We are so excited to teach this text with freshmen next year, but can only do so by fundraising and purchasing our own books. Students will be able to use books at home and in school.
