Magnet Math materials will allow our first grade students to count by multiples of ten more or ten less given any two-digit number. The teachers will be able to use the materials to help our first grade students develop mental images and strategies to count by tens and explain the reasoning used. Our students minds are developing and growing each and everyday and the experiences that their teachers provide to them must presented in multiple ways. This project will allow our teachers to develop their mental and visual capabilities in mathematics. The magnetic strips allow teachers to build up to 120 when the students are ready. There are blank magnetic squares that allow the teachers to assess fluency in number sense where students can tell them what numbers are hidden and what comes before or after selected numbers.
Our students will be able to become fluent in mentally finding ten more or less and one more or less. It is important to build a solid foundation of number sense in our first grade students that they can utilize in solving solving mathematical problems and in later grades. We have five first grade classes and one chart will be used in each classroom. The students will gain skills necessary for computation and developing critical thinking skills using the materials from Magnet Math.
