At our school, we have amazing students who enter our building every day. Sometimes, however, they are dealing with issues that cause strong emotions that interfere with learning. When students are sad, angry, anxious, stressed, etc., they are not as likely to have good attendance, grades, and behavior.
We want to provide a safe room at school where students can go to learn healthy ways to self-regulate in order to help them now and as they grow and develop.
This room will be filled with items to help students self-regulate, such as calm lighting and noise machines, flexible seating, various types of stress relief fidgets, and weighted lap pads. There will also be soft padding on the floor so students can sit or lie down in order to self-regulate.
When students are able to gain control of their emotions in healthy ways, their attendance, grades, and behavior will improve. They will also be better equipped to handle emotions as they enter middle school, high school, and adulthood.
