My fifth graders have a challenging academic year ahead! We work hard every minute of our day! Many of the students find it challenging to sit at their desks for lengthy periods of time. Imagine an executive in his or her office, pacing the floor as they generate ideas, doing their best thinking as they walk. This is what I want to offer to my students. With 25 students, and a late-day recess, in-place movement is the best option.
Offering flexible seating options (including standing!) while learning allows them to release their excess energy and increase focus and concentration on their academics. Standing desks provide a workspace that allows students to stand and have their materials at a comfortable level. I currently allow students to stand as they work if they want, but with their standard desks, they need to bend over to the work surface.
Another option is "wobble seats." These brightly colored stools have a bit of a circular bottom. Students need to concentrate on staying straight. This physical effort has the effect of freeing one's mind for deeper concentration.
In addition, the novelty of these items will create excitement and enthusiasm in the classroom, which is always positive!
