It is important to me that students in my classroom are focused and engaged during whole group mini lessons. While I put a lot of effort in my planning to make sure I keep my students attention through short bursts of learning, students struggle to sit and are uncomfortable. I have several flexible seating choices around the classroom for independent and partner work time, but I鈥檝e realized that my students need more options for carpet time.
Most of the 16 second graders that I have could really benefit from an alternative seating choice that will allow them to sit more comfortably during instruction. They are unable to or are uncomfortable sitting on the carpet for a given amount of time. I鈥檝e noticed students rocking, sitting on the stomachs on chairs and frequently moving spots.
Even with short 5 minute lessons, students are uncomfortable. I鈥檇 like to offer them a choice that would allow them to be engaged and comfortable while we work on building stamina in a whole group or small group setting.
