My 10th and 11th Human Geography students are motivated to learn through experiencing food. No matter how tired or sometimes cranky, when food is involved, they perk up. They love to share with me, things going on in their lives and absolutely love to learn about my Cambodian heritage. They are personable and extremely kind students. Because they trust and respect me, they give me permission to push and challenge them. They can be easily intimidated with difficult assignments however, they do not give up easily. They are persistent and resilient. 80% of our students are on free and reduce lunch. There are 1050 students at Como Park High School and over 35 languages spoken. We have a large population of refugee students and many of our students have endured a lot of trauma. Despite these challenges, they show up and continue to strive and do their best to learn and to build connections.
