The purpose of this project is to give Elementary students the opportunity to learn and practice mindfulness techniques throughout their day, by beginning the school day with a calm body and mind. So many of our school's students come from chaotic households where trauma is either currently being experienced or has happened in the past (i.e.: parental incarceration, abandonment, homelessness, food insecure, domestic violence, and even abuse). It is my goal to provide as many students the tools to help them cope with their circumstances through mindfulness teachings.
As more schools are becoming Trauma-Informed, it is our hope that this program can be successful in meeting the emotional needs of our students. I have been trained in Trauma-Focused Mindfulness and Yoga strategies to assist youth in developing necessary coping skills. These skills are vital to the student being able to focus and learn throughout the day at school.
The 'Mindful Mornings' program will be available to students who wish to attend in the morning during the hour before school starts at 8 am- 8:50 am. During this time the focus will be on identifying Mindfulness techniques, discussing how they can be implemented, and practicing these skills to reduce dis regulation throughout the day. The program will be held 3 days a week, during the entire school year.
