In my experience as a special education teacher of an Integrated Co-teaching classroom, is that ALL students benefit from having various supports. My students have a variety of special needs, at times, includes Autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities. These items will be imperative to their ability to engage in curriculum across all content areas as well as to facilitate a better learning experience. For my students with difficulties in focusing or fidgetiness, the chair cushions, wobble chairs and fidget toys will help them stay calm and focused during whole or small group instruction. The trampoline and body sock, in my past experience, helps provide students who need more sensory input. The floor mats, floor desks, clipboards will help all my students more flexible and autonomous space to work. The bean bags and stools will provide engaging areas for reading and small group instruction to help students have a more meaningful learning experience.
We as educators, are the ones who need to adapt the environment that will best facilitate all our students' learning needs. Every child has the ability to learn. A child can be "different, but not less".
These items will give my students access to a more engaging and flexible environment that will help them succeed as not only students, but as individuals too.
