Currently, we are using lower quality equipment that I purchased myself from Walmart. If you know anything about middle schoolers, you know that they are rough on materials and these cheap balls don't stand a chance. I have tried putting duct tape on them to help with the lifespan of dodge balls; however, unfortunately, our gym has no air conditioning, and as a result the duct tape 'sweats' and falls off. Like a lot of teachers in high poverty areas, I have used so much of my own money repeatedly purchasing cheap equipment, trying to get by without spending a lot, yet the costs add up over time. These cheap kickballs quickly deflate in the heat or pop easily because of the low quality material they are made from.
New high quality athletic equipment would allow me to plan a range of fun, healthy activities for my middle school students. Kickball and dodge ball are two of my students' favorites because everyone gets to be a part of the team and neither require a lot of specialized skill or natural ability. In fact, they are so popular with students that we even have a kickball and dodge ball club! The tug of war rope would also be AMAZING! I have so many competitive students who are unable to stay after school to participate in team sports. This would be something completely new and exciting for them and provide them a competitive outlet. As we all know, American students spend way too much time sitting in front of a screen. Having quality resources that appeal to all the students and encourage them to get up and move is a win for everyone. They get to have fun while learning sportsmanship and enjoying the benefits of a healthier, less sedentary lifestyle.
