Expanding the literature offerings at my high school beyond the American Literature and British Literature canon offers many benefits to my student population.
For my Latino students, reading an acclaimed writer from Latin America is an important affirmation and inspiration. For all of my students, the sophistication of the structure of this novel, the motivations of its characters, and its narrative perspective give ample opportunity for engaging discussion and analysis.
This novel not only gives students exposure to magic realism, it also provides the opportunity to look at a work through multiple lenses: moral, psychological, and social. In this students gain confidence in their own capacity to engage authentically in the work of literary criticism.
