Students need to interact with the written word. In my classroom, I try to make lessons collaborative and colorful. This is why supplies are continuously needed. My students get excited about the littlest things like pretty highlighters, hands-on activities, and group poster work. Without constant replenishment of materials, they cannot do the things that make learning fun to them. Many people think only the elementary school kids want to draw in the classroom, but I find my high school students love to be just as creative, especially when creating presentations, analyzing characters and symbols, and interacting with the text through colorful annotations.
