Scholastic News Magazines are an essential asset to every classroom because they are short and meaningful, and feature integration of all subjects in each issue.
Students enjoy the online component to these magazine subscriptions because it allows for expanding vocabulary. They enjoy the weekly read aloud as they're able to follow along with it from their very own in color magazine copy which they get to keep! Scholars enjoy reading these in groups, participating in the suggested activities and learning from the varied lessons included. (I love that they come with a lesson plan and assessments to check for understanding.) Students also enjoy the comprehension game featured in each magazine issue as well. Their favorite portion of the subscription is the included online access to videos which allow them to experience various stories covered bringing articles to life. It is the experience of a virtual field trip every time. The added variety of informational text exposes children to the real world around them.
While standardized testing requires we spent most time on core content; I love teaching current events and science too and these magazines allow for purposeful, standard tied skills which are easily able to fit into our busy daily schedules. These magazines offer so much more than valuable news and literature.
A welcoming and calm environment sets the tone in a classroom. I love adding final touches of home in our classroom every year. I do this with calming colors and d茅cor but also with the use of media such as magazines and videos to enhance the learning.
