Our yearbook students are photographers but also journalists. We began broadcasting a school news program, The Hornet's Nest News, just 4 years ago. Since then, it has grown in popularity as students from other schools and other communities have begun to tune in each week. This camcorder, microphone and other equipment will help students see how a real news room works and will also give them the chance to experience using their voices to broadcast important events going on in their small town. Our current means do not give them the real feel for how to run a communications project as we are currently streaming our school news via a first generation iPad. These students need to understand that their work is important and therefore valued, which will help them garner the confidence they need to succeed in communications.
