Like many teachers, most of the supplies that are in our classrooms are purchased out-of-pocket. Yes, our district allows us to requisition basic classroom supplies, but the requested items in this project have failed to make it through the latest budget cuts. We have a very limited amount of play-based materials, which are crucial in helping "play" build the foundation for conceptual learning.
Because there is such a push for early achievement in literacy and math, many forget that young children learn the most when they are engaged in play. Essentially, I want my young learners to "get their hands dirty" and work through concepts without being glued to their seats. Play is the cornerstone of learning!!
The variety of materials purchased are ideal candidates in sustaining my learners' inquisitiveness, eagerness to explore, and enjoyment of inventing and building things. While short-term achievement might seem important, the long-term benefits of a classroom filled with play are far greater than any "4" on a standards-based report card!
