My students and I live and work in a beautiful, rural community on the Redwood Coast of Northern California. Almost 50% of our student population is considered to be socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many do not have access to technology in their homes but are very eager to use it. They are sweet, smart, innovative and enthusiastic learners. Oftentimes tools like microscopes or computers inspire the most reluctant learner. These reluctant learners are sometimes the most proficient in the use of hands on materials giving them a chance to engage in learning in a whole new way while sharing their skills with peers. This ability to achieve with a new tool builds academic confidence which in turn contributes to greater learning and better behavior. Our school is one of the best middle schools in the county, if I do say so myself. We have an innovative and collaborative staff of caring, motivated professionals.
