When my project is fully funded, every one of my students will get a chance to make a ceramic sculpture. Kindergarten and under will create animals that tie into their social study unit. First and second grade is going to make monster mouths that will reinforce our school's positive behavior program. Third grade will make birds that tie into their social studies unit.
Students will use multiple ceramic techniques pinch pot, coil, and slab techniques to make sculptures. After the sculptures have been fired, students will use glazes to paint their sculptures. One more time into the kiln they will go before they are ready to take home.
Students will learn where clay comes from and how it is processed. We will also discuss the science of how clay goes through its various stages from being like play dough to being solid like a coffee cup.
