Promoting engagement among students is one the key prerequisites needed to ensure retention and inspire learning among students. Over the past several years, I have had the opportunity to implement learning strategies around games that students enjoy and the results have been tremendous. In my classroom, we use simulations like mock Congress and games like Kahoot to promote learning. Now, I'm ready to take it to the next level!
Gamifying learning has shown to promote engagement and retention. Having returned to school after foregoing traditional in-person learning for 18 months, engaging students in the curriculum is incredibly important to closing the learning gap that we faced prior to the pandemic and that has only been exacerbated since March 2020. Currently, I already use Crime Scene Investigations on various lessons using primary and secondary sources. I intend to use the puzzles, locks, lockboxs, black light pens, and flashlights to create a tactile and team building experience for my students as they learn in the form of escape room challenges. In addition, my students love the game Kahoot, but in a time where students have increasingly felt isolated, I plan to move students from individual based games to team based games using the game buzzers in class to promote teamwork and camaraderie.
