鈥淧ainting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.鈥
鈥 Jackson Pollock
The art of American Artist, Jackson Pollock, is the purest form of self-expression ever created. As part of the Abstract Expressionism movement, Pollock lead this style of art and became one of the most original American Artists of the 20th century. His work, called 鈥渁ction painting,鈥 reflects the roller coaster of emotions he felt throughout his life and allowed him to break away from traditional art-making methods to create one-of-a-kind abstract art. His methodology of dripping the paint, splattering the paint or simply just pouring the paint onto a canvas allowed him to break free and literally dance around his paintings as they became an entity of their own. For this project, each 5th grade student will put their canvases together on the floor to create a large work surface in order to experiment with these abstract painting techniques. Once the painting is complete, each student will be able to keep their part of the whole composition, which will reflect the emotions and individuality of each student involved. Prior to painting, a discussion will take place regarding emotions and different ways people express themselves. Art will be focused on as a means of expressing how you feel, positive or negative, while serving as a form of self-discovery. Dancing around a huge canvas with your classmates will also promote excitement and accomplishment as they finish up their last year in elementary school. With the help of a counselor in the county, the students will splatter paint onto canvases using paint stirrers as they learn how to paint like 鈥淎ction Jackson.鈥
