Eight and nine year olds are made to wiggle, dance, and, move around----all day long. In fact, research shows that the more kids move, the better they learn! I do my best to create a classroom environment where students are able to stay active all day long, and the stretch bands on this list will help me keep my students moving so they can do their best learning. The bands also provide a calming outlet for students that experience stress or trauma outside of school, helping them manage anxiety and emotions so they don't inhibit their learning.
About 80% of my incoming students each year are reading below grade level, so the other critical piece of this project focuses on my students' literacy needs. The phonics curriculum on this classroom supply list, Words Their Way, will provide me with the tools I need to work one-on-one and in small groups with students to provide the intervention they need to get them reading and writing on grade-level. This opens doors to a whole new world of reading and learning for these kids!
Finally, as these readers are growing, we'll need a vast and inspiring classroom library stocked with books that entice students to read tons of books. Years of research have demonstrated that the greatest growth in reading comes when students simply read!
A love for reading is a gift that carries an individual through a life-long adventure of learning and growth, and it is a gift that I invite you to join me in giving to my students this school year.
