Literacy is one of the most important skills that a child will use in life. I鈥檓 requesting informational books directly related to the content areas for my fifth graders. These donations will allow me to have a classroom library full of much needed informational books that are high interest and on an appropriate level for my students to read. Students are expected now more than ever to comprehend, write, and learn using informational text. Studies have shown that many teachers overuse fictional stories to teach reading and don鈥檛 use informational text enough. During a research study, Duke found that 鈥渢eachers spend an average of 3.6 minutes a day on informational text.鈥 There is an urgency to create classrooms that use a 50/50 balance of fictional and informational text to prepare students for the real-world. The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), 鈥渉as used informational text for 50% of the passages on the fourth grade reading assessment.鈥 Throughout the year, I will be in need of different types of informational text books to use as read-alouds, interactive reads, small group instruction, mentor texts for reading and writing. Exposing students to informational books will give them an opportunity to learn how to read and learn from them.
