I started in the middle of last school year and as the semester moved along, I noticed that while my students were doing independent work, they did not have the skills, space, or materials to do the work independently; they always had someone by their side. This year, my co-teacher and I have figured out the space for them to work independently, and we will work on the skills, but we need those materials for each of them to be able to master those skills on their own.
Our goal for this year is to have each student grow as an individual and build those skills for life after school. Having their own binder and pencil box will help build their responsibility and their understanding of how to take care of materials/their belongings. Being able to work around the room with lap desks, builds their autonomy and gives them the power of choice. When they aren't working around the room, the lap desks will be housed at their independent stations so they always know where their materials are.
I have seen the way that having their own choices in the classroom and a sense of pride in their belongings has helped them grow as people. Please help me continue to grow those skills for those students who need them the most. Thank you!
