Many of my students don't have te basic supplies necessary to be successful in the classroom. It is the goal of my project to provide them with pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, poster board, etc so that when they come to school they can focus on school.
I have students who have to watch their siblings because their single-mother is working three jobs just to put food on the table. I have students who live in households with drug dealers and addicts. I have students who only eat when they are at school. I have students that can only find a consistent and positive adult in the classroom. In short, I have many students who have much bigger problems than forgetting a pencil. If I can provide the basic supplies needed for success in my classroom I can give those students one less thing to worry about in their complicated lives. In turn, helping them to close the achievement gap and leave high school college and career ready.
