I teach second grade at a K-6 school. Many of our students are English Language Learners, and our scores are in the bottom 5% statewide. Many students come from homes that have little to nothing regarding print and text; 98% have free or reduced lunches. They are very sweet kids that are excited about being in school. Our after school program has a long waiting list; for many, school is the safest, most structured, and nurturing place.
