We will dive into the story of Paul Fisher and his middle school experience as a newcomer to Tangerine, Florida. The students will likely relate to many of the characters and situations in the book. When they are allowed to read a text that is relatively modern and unlike other texts they may have read in previous English classes, they will engage and therefore encourage higher literacy skills.
Students will identify greatly with the overarching themes of Tangerine: identity, appearances versus reality, and what it means when we grow up and learn important truths not only about the world in which we live, but about ourselves as well.
