Our classrooms are a second home to many of our students. It can be a place where they have a voice and where they have a choice. As our students grow to understand who they are as learners, they should be given opportunities to use their voices and to take ownership of their learning. One way we are doing that in my classroom is by emphasizing the use of flexible seating.
For too long we have made assumptions about what is best for students and used a one size fits all mentality to teach. In my classroom, I am asking my students to reflect on who they are as learners and what they require to be successful. I am asking them to identify their needs and advocate for them. One way they can do that is through choice seating. Through Donors Choose, I am asking for materials that are available for my students' use as an alternative to traditional desks in rows seating. They can use the mobile desks to move to the place in the classroom most suitable to maximize their learning, whether it be right next to the teacher during math or in a quiet place for independent writing. A large group meeting place is integral for me to personalize and tailor my teaching for what the entire class needs. The large rug will provide a place for that and will be used everyday. I am excited to bring choice into my classroom and am hopeful that you see the benefits that your donations will provide these thoughtful learners.
