Bean bags and other types of soft seating provide proprioceptive sensory input which help to soothe and prepare the brain for learning. Many students use pressure as an effective way to combat stress and self-regulate when becoming emotional. Calming corners are effective in giving students appropriate outlets for anger while teaching them effective ways to self-advocate their needs. The bean bag chair and bed rest will be used in the independent reading station to help students maintain focus.
A sensory diet consists of planned sensory breaks throughout the day that keep students at an emotional baseline, which helps prevent outbursts, boredom, and improves focus. Weighted lap blankets are a great resource to use during mini-lessons, as it allows for students to receive deep pressure while still engaged in the curriculum.
Students have opportunities to earn short "brain-breaks" to demonstrate successful completion of tasks. These fidget toys will allow students to relieve restlessness appropriately without having to be removed from the academic setting. These fidgets will all so be used when students earn objective "brain-breaks" as a reward for completing academic tasks.
