Our sophomores will be writing personal memoirs using the Hero's Journey. The project will enhance students abilities in all aspects of literacy: the will be reading, analyzing, and creating memoirs to teach them the value of their own voices and experiences.
For some students, book group discussions are the first time that their values, their experiences, and what they read in a book are intertwined in a conversation. These memoirs will allow them to engage with peers as they read a memoir of their personal choosing.
Your help in giving students a choice book to enrich their study of the memoir will also start our year with an experience that is empowering and builds community. Research shows that independent reading is a strong support for building vocabulary and that having choices in what to read supports students' reading attainment.
