I do a lot of independent reading in my ELA and reading classes; however, my room set-up does not allow for much movement during this time. The round tables and standard chairs take up most of the floor space and allow for zero flexibility in seating arrangements. Flexible foot bands on ALL chairs in the room and alternative seating options around the perimeter would greatly increase the amount of movement and flexibility I would be able to incorporate into our day.
In my classroom, I am able to build lasting relationships with students by reading their writing and by reading books alongside them. I also love giving book recommendations and connecting students with the PERFECT independent reading book.
I want to enrich the reading experiences my students have in my classroom! I believe flexible seating is one way to do that. Imagine every student sitting the exact same way at the exact same chairs as they read. How boring! Now, imagine students sitting in various places around the room and utilizing movement tools such as the flexible foot bands as they read. It may seem like a small change, but it can have a HUGE impact. When kids are relaxed and comfortable while reading, they are going to enjoy the experience more. Help me transform my classroom and give my students the reading experience they deserve!
