Building young writers is my goal this school year. We have seen how essential writing is across the curriculum and in standardized testing. Students struggle with writing as they lack confidence and ideas. In the past, I have had students keep their writing in their journals or life books. The final pieces are usually graded and passed back. I don鈥檛 like this because sometimes they don鈥檛 find their way home or students are unable to compare their pieces throughout the year. They lose their importance. Students need a place to begin their collection of writing masterpieces. If students are given a binder with dividers to separate their finished pieces according to genres, it will help with organization. It will be a great tool for reflections, self assessments, student models, and for parent conferences. I want students to see how their writing has evolved from the beginning of the school year until the end. The goals are for them to see growth in their writing and confidence.
