Flexible seating allows students to sit where they learn best. We all learn differently, and in my experience, students who have a choice in where they get to complete their work tend to feel more focused, engaged and successful.
Providing students with flexible seating options also helps them to develop important life skills such as self-reflection, responsibility, accountability, and taking ownership of their choices. Students are expected to help in the creation of flexible seating norms, and must sign a flexible seating contract agreeing to follow the norms that have been decided upon. When deciding on which flexible seating option is the most effective, students must complete a short survey, prompting them to self-reflect on where they chose to sit, why they chose to sit there, and how effective they were in completing their work. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to continue to be self-reflective, and are expected to make a different seating choice if their current option is not effective.
The current flexible seating options that students are able to choose from are wobble stools, yoga balls, lap desks, and clipboards to work on the floor. While some students find success working at a traditional desk and chair setting, I would like to have enough flexible seating options in my classroom available for every student to utilize if they would like to. This is why I have selected products such as the foldable camping chairs, bungee chair, and bean bags to add as comfortable flexible seating options.
I have seen how flexible seating increases student motivation, comfort and positive demeanor. I am excited to see how these additional options will help my students continue to grow!
