Proficiency in two languages (bilingualism) affords students academic advantages beyond language comprehension. Benefits of bilingualism include greater academic engagement, school performance, and higher attention spans (NPR, 2016). Students with proficiency in Spanish will also have a competitive advantage in the job market. Furthermore, valuing knowledge that is obtained at home (Spanish) in the classroom strengthens students' academic identities.
I want my classroom to be a place where students see their primary language as an advantage in their academic pursuits, not as something that must be quickly forgotten in order to make space for English proficiency.
A subscription to this Spanish-language educational magazine will enable students to build reading skills in Spanish. I also hope that having more Spanish-language texts in the classroom will encourage students to view their primary language as an academic asset, therefore, continuing to practice that language as they strengthen their skills in their secondary language (English).
