These materials will make a positive difference in my students' lives. In kindergarten, learning to read is vital! We constantly practice letter recognition and letter sounds, which helps students learn to read. These tools will help them visualize and hear the different sounds within the alphabet. It will also give them help in learning how to write words to better prepare them during our writer鈥檚 workshop time each day.
The desktop calendar and 鈥淢y Calendar鈥 will help students have a constant routine each morning to learn patterns from the calendar, learn about different types of weather/seasons, and recognize the days of the week/months of the year. The magnetic tabletop board will help students easily see what we are learning as a group during Guided Reading time at our small group table. The magnetic letters will give them the opportunity to practice their phonemic awareness independently, in small groups, and one-on-one with me.
I feel that hands-on, kinesthetic learning is most effective and this is how I plan to use these materials. I also am a firm believer in capturing student interests, so I think that these new materials would benefit greatly in that aspect. Being my first year teaching kindergarten, I am looking to greatly increase my collection of manipulatives and help my students in any way that I can!
