I believe that we must design our educational spaces with students in mind. This goes beyond the posters on the wall; the furniture itself is important for success.
Ultimately, I want my students to feel comfortable- to feel seen and respected. If I appreciate something like a comfortable chair at work, my students will as well. Flexible seating is a relatively new movement and usually focused on younger students, but I introduced a few "zones" last year and had great success. I was able to source three large tables, rolling chairs, two couches and a coffee table. My students enjoyed the atmosphere and mostly chose the seating option that would help them be successful.
I found out that this often meant no seat at all. I love sitting on the floor to work, so I shouldn't have been surprised. I would love to introduce bean bag chairs, a rug, and a low table to the list of options. With this project, our room will have desks, couches, floor seating, tables, and a standing desk for my students to sit (or stand) around while doing research, discussing their novel, or typing an essay.
My teaching style has been moving away from teacher-centered lecture toward student-centered discussion and collaboration. I would love for my classroom furniture to reflect that as well.
