As teachers we are challenged to differentiate the curriculum, Common Core for my district, to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. Most times our school funded resources are for the regular and special education programs because it is assumed the academically and intellectually gifted students do not need anything extra because they have already learned the skills. However, this group of students need lessons designed specifically to give them opportunities to cultivate critical thinking skills. The resources contain lessons developed at Vanderbilt University for gifted and talented students that will challenge this population of students on a new level.
One resource, Finding Freedom, uses excerpts from America's most famous political speeches from a diverse group of political figures concerning freedom to challenge students to evaluate, analyze, and make connections between speeches, historical context, and connections to today's society. Each book contains four units to help develop students' abilities to evaluate, synthesize, and analyze a variety of quality texts, including poetry, primary sources, informational text and literature.
