Moving is what comes naturally to the majority of my students. In fact, for most, being able to move is a necessity. As a result, seating is a "hot" commodity in our classroom. We have one chair, affectionately known as the "Spinny" chair that my students all crave to be in. It is the only chair that allows the students to move while in the classroom. Unfortunately, this one chair can also be a distraction; as the students tend to fuss over who gets to use it and the spinning can be distracting to the other students.
Donating to our classroom project will ultimately lead to increased student learning by helping to increase the focus and attention for my students. Being able to focus is the greatest challenge for my students. Having opportunities to move, whether during instruction or when working independently, is one of the interventions that work best to help my students focus on both work and instruction. Having flexible seating, that allows for movement, is what I am seeking with this project. Chairs that allow students to discreetly move will allow for both the students' need to move as well as help with increasing their focus.
