Today's science classes use the Next Generation Standards as the foundation of what is taught to our students. The words design (3x), engineering (1x), illustrate (4x), and model (8x) are used throughout the Standards.
My students have built cars, bumpers, spacecraft, planetary rovers, and even space stations using drafting principles to begin with and then recreating their design using everyday cardboard. Their cars have moved because of gravity and elastic power. As you may have noticed, while this project is geared for my Physical Science class it will benefit another 90 students in my Astronomy class.
With these two tools, a t-square and a protractor, my students will make much more progress. They can design and draft representations of atoms, molecules, vehicles, and even waves. Then they will build them out of cardboard or papier-m芒ch茅 and learn much more beyond the science. We can make much out of simple things like paper, glue, and cardboard, as long as we use our creativity to solve our challenges.
