The materials in this project will allow me to focus less on how I will obtain materials to not only engage students but to align my teaching with Next Generation Science Standards. These standards require teachers to adapt their teaching to a constructivist position, where students learn from interacting and creating knowledge with their peers.
I hope to integrate these kits into our current curriculum, which is aligned with outdated science standards so that my students have the best chance of making meaningful connections to science. These connections to science allow them to feel that they have the ability to pursue careers in the sciences, where populations of students from my area are traditionally underrepresented.
The kits also allow time for me to source additional resources for labs that I hope to create on my own. Having several ready to go activities or labs allows me the opportunity to further engage with students on a more personal and in-depth manner. Allowing me to learn who they are and how I can best facilitate their education.
