I am going to teach Fahrenheit 451 for the second time this up coming school year. However, I want to use a different approach using graphic novels. I want to teach a book using graphic novels in order to give my students a unique literary experience.
Reading graphic novels encourages multi-modal literacy in that students work to make meaning of words but also images, facial expressions, colors, shapes, and positions. There are so many other benefits to graphic novels in the classroom for ESL students, special education students, and other students who might be struggling to read. Furthermore, graphic novels present a unique and profound literary experience for students who might not have picked up a graphic novel before.
The story of Fahrenheit 451 itself has an impactful message for our 21st century students, having them question the place of literature in society, the value of technology, and the impact of "progress" on the world.
