Providing alternative movement seating for students with heightened sensory needs, students with ADHD, and students who have a little extra energy will remove one obstacle for them to access the lesson and to help them learn.
With these chairs, students are meeting their sensory needs through body movement WHILE they are learning rather than meeting their needs INSTEAD of learning. Multiple studies show that balance chairs promote concentration for all learners and that active seating is a therapist-recommended accommodation for students with heightened sensory needs.
Additionally, many students on my caseload also receive occupational therapy to improve their motor skills. These chairs have the added benefit of helping to improve motor skills and improving concentration.
I will be using these chairs at my desk where I have reading, writing, math, and social skills groups. I will also be sharing these chairs with the special education teachers who share the learning center classroom so that all students in special education at my school can benefit from them.
