Flexible seating is a way to help students focus. Many students do not have knowledge of how to expell their excess energy in a constructive way that encourages a positive learning environment.
Within the classroom, we do many activities that do not follow traditionally sitting at a desk and/or sitting in a chair. Working with hands on materials, cooperatively learning in literacy, math and science centers as well as working in groups during STEM are several of the learning opportunities that occur within my classroom. Changing the location and the accessiblity of the content can greatly impact a child's success over the content being learned.
By providing several types of seating, this allows 4 and 5 year old students to engage while they are actively learning and moving. Wobble chairs and balance balls will help those students who struggle with sitting still in order to concentrate. The portable lap chairs and floor cushions will allow my littles to work within small groups while still having their own personal space. Sitting spots will allow my students to show ownership of their assigned area.
I want to provide the best learning environment for my students to be inspired to be the future scientists, mathematicians, engineers and ultimately critical thinkers in this ever changing world.
