As a teacher entering this challenging year, one of my goals is to make sure every student in my class leaves a reader. I know the key to this is getting actual books in the hands of students. While reflecting on how this will have to look different this year, I realize that having many small groups all reading different books, switching them out often just can't happen. But real reading of real books still needs to happen.
Being my first year of 5th grade (moving up with my 4th graders), I researched the top books every 5th grader should read. From that list, I created a plan that involves a whole class book we will read (and discuss in leveled small groups) and a paired read aloud book to make connections to. I am utilizing two class sets I already have and am hoping to add at least 4 more so that I can send them home with students at the start of the year- so we are prepared with whatever comes our way!
These book won't just benefit this year, but will continue on with my next classes. More than ever, students need a way to escape our crazy world - and what better way than in a book?!
