The diverse selection of books will help my students to be able to see themselves in books. This is so important for young students so that they are able to identify with the characters and see themselves as those characters. These books will allow them to make those connections and relate to books which I hope will make them into lifelong readers.
These books will also help my students to have a different perspective. I want to teach my students that we are not all alike and that we need to respect others for these differences. I want them to respectfully have conversations and ask questions and I will use these books as a springboard for those conversations.
