I currently do not have tables that come with storage for lab equipment in my classroom. Scientists often have their own set of basic lab equipment present at their bench that they are responsible for. A major goal of my classes, both Biotechnology and AP Biology, is to show students what being a scientist is actually like. Receiving these storage units will change the vibe and environment of our classroom by providing a more authentic lab experience.
Allowing students to store lab equipment at their own table will provide a sense of ownership of and responsibility within our class lab. Students will be responsible for taking care of and making sure that set of lab equipment assigned to them remains in top shape just like they would in a research lab or even a college lab course.
The other major benefit will be the increase of efficiency in both the students and my time. Having easy access to equipment will increase the ability of students being able to complete the labs within the class period by not having to go all around the room to get equipment. It will also save time on my end by not having to set up/distribute equipment to student stations as a part of lab prep.
With the lack of fun, engaging, lab experiences due to remote learning last year, students should have all that and more this year as a part of my science courses. Having this storage will assist me in doing so efficiently, but also providing students some ownership and responsibility within our space that is closer to an authentic lab experience for not only this year, but all the years to come!
