Ten years ago, our school developed an independent reading program called the Million Page Challenge. We challenge the freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class to each read at least one million pages by the end of the school year. (We have approximately 2,200 students who attend our school.) Our students always exceed this goal due to our dedication to get books in the hands of our students. As English teachers, we understand the need for free access to books that are interesting, engaging, and inspiring. This is why we offer extensive classroom libraries. However, over the last seven years, more than 100 books I have purchased for my classroom have never returned to me. I hope those books are being read somewhere in the universe, but I also would like to replace them with more relevant titles for my current students. Many of our students come to us in the聽ninth grade with below-average reading levels and many struggles to deal with. We have over 50% free and reduced lunch, many students who live in poverty, and due to those experiences, many lack access to one of the most important tools that will help with their education: books. Every day, my students begin class by reading books of their choice for 10-15 minutes. We have reading celebration days, host guest author Skypes and visits, participate in literature circles and book聽clubs, and share favorite books with our school. We really love reading! I'd like to expand my classroom library. The titles listed below were chosen with both current and future students in mind. They have a home waiting for them in my classroom, and I have eager readers who will most definitely benefit from the stories that live between the covers.
