Every year, my students and I study Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol as the holiday season approaches. Often times, I have students who are hesitant to read a book written in 1843. They'll say, "I just don't understand how this is still relevant?"
By adding Jason Reynolds's Long Way Down to our unit of study, students will have a modern-day story with characters they can relate to and identify with to make comparisons. This novel will help me show my students that whether a book was written nearly two-hundred years ago or two years ago, there is always something to learn.
