I teach an intermediate Severely Emotionally Challenged classroom. I have 10 students in my classroom at this time. My students are very compassionate and want to learn. They all come from households living far below the poverty line and as a result are unaware of many of the opportunities, adventures, and experiences life has to offer. Many of them have never left their neighborhoods. I do my best to provide them with empathy, compassion, respect, and guidance while at school.
As George Couro's said, "Technology will not replace teachers, but technology in the hands of a great teacher can be transformational".
My students need help with social and emotional skills as well as the traditional subjects taught in school. There are apps such as Mood adapter and toontastic, that I use in the classroom to assist with my teaching these skills to them. However, I have very limited access to technology and would like to have more iPads in the classroom so that I may offer them more opportunities to use technology. Being that my students live so far below the poverty line and have such limited access to technology and the resources available through technology that it makes them very grateful when they are allowed to use it and makes it very easy for me to keep them on task, for them to stay engaged, and also assists me greatly in getting them to enjoy school.
