I am in my second year of the "Peace Room"...and I am inspired and thankful every day that I have an opportunity to work with these students.
They may want a hug from an adult but are afraid to ask, and these items can do that. Items such as the weighted blankets and stuffed animal can work by just sitting and holding, or walking around. An item that has a little weight makes your brain focus on carrying it, which can be all a child needs.
Items such as the liquid floor mat, balance balls or scooter will bring special fun to students as they come in to do multiple activities, giving them a chance to get their heart pumping and their body moving in a safe way.
There are so many needs for a room like this. I wish you could see the faces of a child that walks in for the first time, looking at the lights, and bubbles, or the child who comes back the next year just to say hi because they miss it. The Peace Room is a place to prevent, de-escalate and de-stress our students so that they can switch their brain to a learning place.
