Having books about a variety of topics is so important in a special education classroom! I am planning language-rich monthly thematic units for my students because it is important to provide them with multiple opportunities to practice academic and functional skills while keeping them engaged with new and exciting materials.
Each month the books will be used to teach my students new vocabulary and improve reading comprehension while also working on social skills such as turn taking, increasing on-task behavior and using their augmentative communication device, visuals or spoken words to communicate.
These academic and functional skills are so important to my students' life-long success!
