My first grade students almost always begin the year by saying, 鈥渙h no... I can鈥檛 read, it鈥檚 too hard for me.鈥 I always tell them that they just haven鈥檛 found their 鈥渏ust right鈥 book yet. When we meet in small groups (guided reading) students are always interested and love that they are successful at the leveled book that鈥檚 just right for them. Their faces IMMEDIATELY brighten after reading a book ON THEIR OWN! They often tell me they are SO excited that they want more, more books at their level and to be able to borrow and read the books at home with their families. The opportunity for more books at various levels allows us to build on story elements, the sequence of events, new vocabulary and making connections to characters and other texts. Here lies the problem, I am limited in my levels at this time. I would love to build up our leveled reading library so that all my students have many genres of books to build their love for reading.
